North Buncombe Quarry Supplies New Belgium Brewery Project in WNC

In 2012, New Belgium Brewery selected Asheville, North Carolina as the location for its first expansion brewery. The city, they said, was chosen in part for its good water quality and mutual commitment to being a sustainable community.

As the nation’s fourth-top craft brewer, a rank based on beer sales volume, NBB is investing $175 million over the course of seven years to build a state-of-the-art brewery in Asheville’s historic River Arts District on Craven Street.

Since the project’s beginnings, North Buncombe Quarry (Hedrick Industries’ mining location in Weaverville, NC) has supplied various aggregate types for multiple aspects of the project: dirt to raise the building pad out of the flood plain, #57 stone went into the aggregate piers to stabilize the building pad and varied aggregate material for utility, roadway, and storm drain projects. In addition, North Buncombe supplied various aggregates for The City of Asheville to redesign Craven Street around the brewery to incorporate bike lanes, sidewalks, greenways, and stream restoration. Both projects are ongoing until the end of 2015.

For the Asheville-NBB grand opening, now scheduled to coincide with their 25th anniversary in July, 2016, a handful of employees from the Fort Collins-NBB are “carrying a torch” on a bike trek from the Colorado brewery location to Asheville’s. At full build-out, NBB will employ 140 full-time workers
