Quarry Tour

In collaboration with the Colburn Earth Science Museum and their NC Science Festival, Grove Stone is hosting a tour of the quarry tomorrow, April 15th, from 2-4:30pm. Come learn about the origins of granite, sand, and gravel for building and transportation infrastructure. Our Hedrick Industries’ staff will guide the tour around the pits, rock piles and equipment. The tour will also include a visit to the on-site stream, a high quality tributary to the Swannanoa River, where you can find and learn to identify aquatic macro-invertebrates. Please remember to bring comfortable walking shoes.

This event is perfect for all ages. Just call the Colburn at (828)254-7162 ahead of time to reserve your spot. Meet at Grove Stone, at 828 Old US Hwy 70W in Swannanoa for an afternoon of exploring! The cost is $10.

Check out the COLBURN EARTH SCIENCE MUSEUM WEBSITE for more information on this event and more announcements!

Every month, the Colburn Earth Science Museum (soon to be the Asheville Museum of Science) hosts a Beer City Science Pub event for the public. Each event is an opportunity to informally join together around an important topic while enjoying local beer. Science pub’s are a great way to kick off your weekend and to learn something new.

Next Friday, February 26th, the presentation is “The State of our Climate 2015: A U.S. And Global Perspective” and will start at 6:30pm. Doors open at 5:30, so come peruse the museum and enjoy and craft brew from Twin Leaf Brewery.

Next Thursday, January 21st, from 4-8pm, Highland Brewing Company is hosting a Community Night as part of the Colburn’s Spot-Light Campaign. The campaign is raising funds to help relocate and rebrand the museum into The Asheville Museum of Science, set to open Spring 2016. The expansion allows the museum to operate in a larger space in the heart of downtown, to make science more accessible to more visitors.

Come out and join Hedrick Industries in helping “move science into the spotlight.” Highland Brewing Company will have great beer, a raffle for cool prizes, Taste-n-See food truck, and good friends. $1 of every pint they sell will be donated to Colburn’s Spot-Light Campaign. Let’s celebrate positive changes together. Hope to see you there!
