Rock The Quarry is All About Community
Posted on September 18th, 2015
This week, Black Mountain News featured an excellent article on Rock the Quarry Trial Challenge 5K, our 8th-annual event happening this Saturday, September 19. Author, Fred McCormick highlights the unique aspects of the race. Not only is the race one-of-a-kind experience running through an active quarry, but the view of the scenic Swannanoa Valley will take your breath away.
Here at Hedrick Industries, we know we would not be able to operate without the support from our neighbors. Rock the Quarry is our way of giving back. To us, the most important part of Rock the Quarry are the non-profits that the race supports: Black Mountain Home for Children and the Colburn Earth Science Museum.

Grove Stone & Sand Hosts Global Reebok Spartan
Posted on September 4th, 2015
Last Saturday, August 29th, Grove Stone & Sand Company (our mining location in Black Mountain, NC) hosted “one of the grittiest courses in the Spartan venue,” as described on the Reebok Spartan website. In deciding to host the race, Grove Stone knew that we had a unique opportunity to share our property with outdoor enthusiasts and provide a boost to the local economy. The race delivered on both accounts. Our mining quarry was a great venue for such an event because of the variety of washed and screened granite material on-site, which were used to design the challenges during the race. The steep slopes and rocky terrain added to the challenge.
5,725 daring participants finished the 8.5-mile race, complete with 30 obstacles, including a fire jump, barbed wire crawl, rope climb, spear throw, tire drag, wall traverse and more! Over all, the event was a blast for Grove Stone and for the community in which we work. Several of our employees and family participated in the event. Jon Neumann, our Western North Carolina Sales Manager and Race Director for the annual Rock the Quarry 5K coming up on September 19th reported, “The race went great. The course was perfect and very challenging!”

Hedrick Employee Appreciation Night
Posted on August 10th, 2015
On July 25th, Hedrick aggregate employees enjoyed an “Employee Appreciation Night” at the Asheville Tourists baseball game. It was a gorgeous night for baseball – great weather and great people abound. 70+ employees, spouses, and family members came to cheer on the Asheville Tourists against the Rome Bears. The Tourists were ahead one run until the last inning, when the Bears pulled ahead with two home runs. More than anything else, employees relished in spending time together outside of work. At Hedrick Industries, we know that our employees are our biggest asset. Going the extra mile to ensure they feel valued is important for morale, motivation, productivity and pure fun. Our “Employee Appreciation Night” was only a small way of saying “thank you!” to the best workforce in Western North Carolina.

Grove Stone & Sand Company joined many other WNC businesses last Friday, June 5th in the Asheville Chamber 5K. The event is an annual, team-based challenge that brings friendly competition together with community Health & Wellness awareness. Over a thousand runners and walkers participated. From our company, Hank Gaston, Ashley Taylor, Joe Lordi and Nathaniel Shelton came sporting their “ROCK” shirts, ready to, well, rock!
Whether their challenge was to beat a personal record, beat a co-worker, or to make it across the finish line, our team enjoyed the physical aspect of the event. They reported that signing up was motivation to be active and that within the first few training runs they felt healthier. Company participation was not limited to runners. Grove Stone also had rockin’ volunteers set up a table to promote Grove Stone & Sand’s own 5K coming up September 19th, Rock the Quarry 5K Trail Challenge & Fun Run. Volunteers for the event included Pepe Holliday and his daughter, Dixie Holliday, Ralph Shelton, Eric Young, and Doc Hensley. Overall, the Asheville Chamber 5K was a great way to get out of the office and build camaraderie with one another and with the community we work in. Thanks, Asheville Chamber!
